Sweden permanent residence for workers and self-employed people in 2026
For an employee using the work-permit route, Migrationsverket states that the applicant generally needs to have held and met work-permit conditions and worked in Sweden for four of the past seven years. Permanent residence is considered together with an extension application.
The applicant must also be able to support themselves financially on a sustainable basis and meet the applicable conduct requirements.
Self-employed applicants use a separate rule: a person who has held and complied with a self-employed permit and run the business in Sweden for at least two years can apply for permanent residence when extending, provided the business sustainably supports them.
EU/EEA citizens use a separate permanent-right-of-residence system and should not mix that five-year framework with national permanent-residence rules.
