Sweden family immigration in 2026
Sweden's national family rules cover spouses, registered partners, cohabiting partners, children and certain other close relationships. They are distinct from EU/EEA residence-card rules.
In many cases the person in Sweden must meet both a maintenance requirement and an adequate-housing requirement.
For 2026, after tax and monthly housing costs are paid, Migrationsverket's standard amount is SEK 6,243 for a single adult or SEK 10,314 for cohabiting spouses/partners, plus age-based child amounts. The home generally must be available for at least one year and be large enough for the household.
Exceptions depend on the sponsor's status and family situation. From 13 July 2026, stricter good-conduct requirements apply to residence-permit applicants, including many family cases.
The Migration Agency announced on 10 September 2026 that new rules for immigration due to family ties will take effect on 1 October 2026. This page is verified on 21 September 2026, so those rules are upcoming and should not be treated as already in force. Applicants filing on or after 1 October should re-check the current official guidance.
