Special Border Document in Uruguay in 2026
The Documento Especial Fronterizo is a specialised Uruguay-Brazil border arrangement, not a national residence route for any Brazilian citizen.
Who it covers
It is directed at qualifying Brazilian nationals resident in the designated linked border localities. Current DNM guidance lists paired areas including Chuy/Chuí, Río Branco/Jaguarão, Aceguá/Aceguá, Rivera/Santana do Livramento, Artigas/Quaraí and Bella Unión/Barra do Quaraí.
Rights and territorial limit
The document can support residence, study and work in the linked border locality. DNM states that it is valid for five years and can be renewed, but residence under this document is restricted to the territorial limits of the locality covered by the agreement.
It should not be presented as a general five-year Uruguay residence permit.
