Scientific Research in Lithuania in 2026

Lithuania has a dedicated temporary-residence framework for lecturers and researchers coming under qualifying contracts with Lithuanian research and study institutions.

Research applications are treated as a priority category in current application rules. Researchers are also among the groups that can use specified external-service-provider exceptions when applying from abroad.

The 2026 immigration amendments introduced additional flexibility for researchers and highly qualified specialists in defined situations.

Research residence is distinct from ordinary employment, EU Blue Card employment and study residence, even when the researcher receives remuneration.
