Bhutan Student Visa and Student Permit in 2026

Bhutan has a dedicated student visa and student-permit framework for foreign nationals admitted to approved study. It is a study-specific status, not a general residence or employment route.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists the student visa among Bhutan's non-tourist categories, while the Department of Immigration Service Division handles the student-permit process.

Who is the student route for?

The 2023 Immigration Rules provide for a student permit for a foreigner enrolled in an academic institution, school, college, shedra or drupdey for a regular course of study. The educational institution and approved course are therefore central to the immigration basis.

Prospective students should obtain admission and follow the current institutional/Department of Immigration process rather than entering as tourists and assuming status can be converted informally.

Visa and permit are separate concepts

A student visa supports entry for the approved study purpose. The student permit governs the foreign student's permitted stay under the immigration framework. Applicants should follow the live Department of Immigration instructions for both stages where required.

How long does student status last?

The student permit is tied to the approved course. The 2023 rules do not support treating student status as an open-ended residence category after the course ends. Renewal or extension depends on continued qualifying study and current Department requirements.

Do not assume that simply remaining enrolled in an unrelated or nominal course creates a permanent residence pathway.

Can students work?

Student permission should not be treated as unrestricted employment authorization. Bhutan's work rules use a separate work-permit system, and the student route does not publish a general post-study or open-work right comparable to programs in some other countries.

If employment becomes the person's real purpose, the correct route should be assessed under Bhutan's employment visa and work-permit framework.

Family members

Do not assume every student can sponsor dependants. Bhutan's dependant rules are category-specific, and the 2023 rules identify particular principal categories whose spouse and children may qualify. FDI investors have separate family treatment under the 2025 FDI Rules; that investor-specific treatment should not be imported into the ordinary student route.

Documents and process

Exact current documents should be confirmed with the admitting institution and Department of Immigration. Common decision points include:

  • confirmed admission to an approved Bhutanese institution or qualifying course;
  • passport/identity documents;
  • institutional recommendation or sponsorship documents where required;
  • evidence relevant to the course and period of study; and
  • compliance with current visa and student-permit filing procedures.

After study

Bhutan does not publish a general automatic post-study work visa in the official materials reviewed for this guide. A graduate who obtains qualifying employment would need to assess the employer-led work-permit route.
